Total solar eclipses have long been associated with turning points in the visible world. Ancient astrologers connected them with the rise and fall of leaders, changes in governments, the redirection of nations, and events that altered humanity’s collective course. When a total solar eclipse occurs in Leo—the sign of the Sun itself—these themes become especially pronounced. Leo governs sovereignty, visibility, identity, and the power that emanates from the Heart. When the Leo Sun disappears, even briefly, something connected with the prevailing expression of power may also be obscured, interrupted, or prepared for transformation.
On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse occurred at 28° Leo 53′. Known as the Great American Eclipse, its path of totality crossed the United States from Oregon to South Carolina. Four days later, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 storm. Harvey was followed closely by Irma and Maria, creating one of the most destructive Atlantic hurricane periods in modern history. The eclipse also arrived during an intensely polarized period in American political life, placing questions of national identity, leadership, authority, and the use of power directly before the collective.
